UTS Gateway Chancellery

This scheme aims to provide the university with a front door whilst also moving the Chancellery from underneath the UTS tower building to a public building on the intersection of Harris St and Broadway. As the first university building or site most pedestrians will encounter arriving at university from the transport hub around railway square this site has the unique opportunity to replace the Broardway entry as the primary entry into UTS campus
The two main move within the scheme are: a large cut through Bon Marche building, and the creation of a new wooden extension to contain the chancellery.
Beyond the gateway a large new plaza is created framed and sheltered by the buildings around it Building 03, The Broadway terraces, the new loft, new podium extension and Building 01. From this plaza students and visitors are able to access all of the university whilst also providing open space for students to relax and decompress from university or the city. The loft has been moved to provide for a larger courtyard, the new Loft's location is with it's back to Broadway facing the courtyard. The loft attempts to maintain it's original character with it's own secluded fenced off courtyard to maintain it's privacy.
The material strategy for the extension is a reverse of Building 03. Where in Building 03 a brick exterior exists with timber interior the new extension is primarily timber construction and structure with masonary interior walls. The extension spans six floors with the upper four floors containing the Chancellery spaces specifically: Office spaces, cafe, meeting, and Event or entertaining spaces. Beneath these the two lower floors are occupied by replacement classroom spaces that are more modern and flexible when compared to those existing in Building 03 currently.
The Facade on the New extension is a Double skin facade with an external timber slats layer. The double skin allows for exahust air extraction whilst also cutting down significantly upon road noise. The wooden slats help to reduce the solar impact upon the building whilst also providing privacy for the Chancellery spaces and to a lesser extent the Classrooms below. In this way to an extent the interior is displayed on the exterior
